Old Ratcliffian Wins Silver Medal in her First Commonwealth Games Event

Old Ratcliffian Georgia Holt (OR 16) and her partner, visually impaired Para-Cyclist Sophie Unwin, won the Commonwealth silver medal in the tandem B time trial at the Lee Valley VeloPark during last month’s Games.

This was Georgia’s first international event, and says she had “no expectations, but just wanted to enjoy it and soak up the atmosphere of a home Commonwealth Event.

“Sophie and I only had a few training sessions together as we were paired up just for the Games. Sophie is a Paralympic medallist and World Champion in endurance events whereas I am a sprinter. She has experienced this pressure before, but luckily for me, the Commonwealth events are sprint only.”

The pair faced utter disappointment only 48 hours earlier as they were denied a bronze medal due to only four pairs cycling in their first event – so winning the silver was made even more sweeter.

Georgia adds, “To have come out of Fridays race with a controversial third place was tough, so we knew we needed to reset ourselves ready for Sunday’s kilometre time trial.”

“I have never been so nervous and nauseous for a race, especially because my boyfriend and England Teammate Cyclist, Matt Rotherham, was racing either side of our time trial! To of had the support of a home crowd throughout our race just meant the world to us both and to come home with a silver was the perfect ending to my first Commonwealth Games.”

Georgia is now back training daily at the Derby Velodrome and will be popping into Ratcliffe once term begins to share her story and show off her silver medal with the students.
