Sports Report – 14th May
Tennis
1st
The 1st girls’ tennis team enjoyed thrilling match against Wellingborough. There was some impressive play from all the girls, however, the final score was 9 matches to 7 – in favour of Wellingborough. Special mention should go to Sarah and Rachel Astill for winning 4 out of 4 rubbers.
U15
The U15A team suffered a tough mid-week defeat by Leicester Grammar in the Aegon league, where the final score was not reflective of the impressive level of play by Ratcliffe. Both the U15A and B teams put up strong performances against Wellingborough despite missing six players due to the D of E expedition. Six players played their debut matches and all the players should be proud of their standard of play. The A team lost 4 – 5 with Annie Rose Reddin and Ella McNeeney winning two rubbers 6 – 5 wins. Strong attacking play and winning volleys earned them Players of the Match. The B team lost 3 – 6 but all the players showed strong tactical play in some very close rubbers.
U13
The U13 team had a convincing 6 – 0 win in their Aegon league match against Leicester Grammar. The entire team were selected from Year 7, playing match tennis for the first time and having to play singles and doubles. They rallied well from the base-line. taking their time to place their shots. Georgie Daynes was the Player of the Match. Well played to all the girls.
Rounders
U14
The U14 team suffered a tough loss against Mount St Mary’s. The first innings was a quick one with some good bowling from Oliva Crawley and some nice fielding from Daata Apifia and Victoria Oliver-Vandell. However, the second innings started with a brilliant rounder from Captain Olivia and followed by a second great rounder from Brooke England. All the girls should be congratulated on the effort they put in and their fantastic attitude. Player’s player and Player of the Match was awarded to Olivia Crawley for an overall great performance.
U13
On Saturday the U13 team travelled to Mount St Mary’s. The girls played very well though but couldn’t quite secure a win, losing by one rounder, 9 – 10. This game really could have gone either way. At half-time there was only half a rounder separating the teams. In the second innings, Mount came out strongly, striking the ball well and scoring a good total for Ratcliffe to chase. Though we came close with some good batting from the girls, we were unlucky with some of our hits going straight to the oppositions fielders, who also made some good catches. On another day we could of have won. Well done to all the girls and their excellent team spirit. Player of the Match goes to Holly Clark-Pratt.
U13/U12B
On Saturday the girls U13/U12B team travelled to Mount Saint Mary’s. The girls started strongly in the first innings which gave them a four rounder advantage. In the second innings, the girls scored four and a half rounders leading them to a 10 and a half rounders to 7 and a half rounders victory. Player of the Match goes to Shreya Mystery for her excellent batting and fielding.
U12A
The U12A team had a tough fixture against Mount St Mary’s losing 15 – 5 ½. There was some great fielding from Jayde Patterson who was unlucky to not catch two people out and some great batting from Sophie Walker and Georgie Daynes. Congratulations to Georgie Daynes who was awarded Player of the Match.
Cricket
1st XI
The 1st XI secured a draw and a win from their games this week. On Thursday, the Emeriti brought a very strong side featuring three Old Ratcliffians. They declared on 265 for 7. In response Ratcliffe played well with Tom Page and Alex Purcell sharing Man of the Match for their batting, as they settled for a pleasing draw, scoring 199 for 5.
On Saturday the team played Welbeck with Man of the Match, Ollie Welch, and Captain Jack Nightingale both scoring unbeaten 50s in a total of 170 for 2. In response, regular wickets fell to a wide variety of bowlers to secure a near 100 run victory.
U15
The U15 team continued winning start to the season with a 26-run victory against Derby Grammar. Ratcliffe scored 146 for 5 in their innings with Aled King scoring 38 and James Turner a composed 67. Some excellent catches including three by James Turner and two by Fin Back helped restrict Derby to 120 for 9 in reply. Man of the Match goes to James Turner for his excellent batting and catching.
U14
On Saturday the U14 team were unfortunately beaten on the penultimate ball, in a nail biting end to the game. Ratcliffe won the toss and opted to bat and although most batsman got in, nobody went on to make a big score. Guy Heywood top scored with 16 as Ratcliffe made a modest 91 off their 20 overs. With the ball, Ratcliffe were unable to make any early breakthroughs but fought back hard late on with Man of the Match Temi Abiodum picking up three wickets.
U13
On Saturday the U13 team completed a comprehensive nine wicket victory. Bowling first it was very pleasing to see the wickets shared around the team with Joe Atkinson taking three wickets for just two runs, Matt Heywood, Lucy Tuttey, Tyler Black and Jacob Butler taking one apiece. However, these were beaten by Oliver McKaig who bowled three balls taking two wickets for no runs. This excellent bowling restricted Derby Grammar to a total of 50. In reply a quick 14 from George Binnie and 10 not out from Man of the Match, Joe Butler, and 19 not out from Matt secured the victory in the 14th over.
U12
For the U12s, Captain Fin Spencer won the toss and decided to bat. Both he and vice-captain Sam Davies put on a fantastic partnership. Both boys managed to steer the ball to through the field resulting in two retirements at 50 runs apiece for the second successive Saturday. A noteworthy performance also came from Harry Cregeen, who played with great composure and, at times, controlled power for a quick 18 runs. A target of 137 was set for Derby to chase. The bowling was tight from the first over, with the boys’ fielding with skill and determination. Man of the Match goes to Tom Ferrier for taking three wickets for five runs in two overs.
Athletics
Congratulations to Mia Atkinson who had a great 1500m race on Saturday at the County Championships. She came first bringing home a gold medal and knocking two seconds off her PB (4.38). Well done!
On Wednesday, a selection of Year 7 to Year 10 students competed in the North East Area Athletics Championships against six other schools in the North East Schools Leicestershire Area at Saffron Lane athletics stadium in Leicester. Times, heights and distances achieved are still to be finalised and will be sent out in a separate report along with confirmation of which students have qualified to represent North East Leicestershire in the Leicestershire Schools County Athletics Finals taking place on Saturday 9th June. Well done to all those who competed and represented the school so well and congratulations to the following students who won their respective events: Dalila Watson, Connor Foster, Avani Gupta, Wilson Lee, Sophie Shields, Xabier Zanotti-Baranano, Zoe Howling, Phelton Tandoh, Daisy Reddin, Josh Wong, Jayde Paterson, Matilda Miles, the Year 7 girls’ relay team and the Year 10 boys’ relay team.
Dance
Congratulations to Annie Jarvis (Year 8), who took part in the Chater School of dance 2018 UK Novice/open awards.
The competition attracts over 1000 competitors, as they travel across the country in search for the UK’s best singers & dancers. Annie was ‘placed’ in all of her dances, achieving five golds, two silvers and four bronze medals. She also won the trophy for the highest marks in her classical duet and the trophy for most promising dancer in the competition.
Equestrian
Congratulations to Brooke England and Olivia Crawley who have both be selected for the East England junior Regional girls tetrathlon team. They will compete on the weekend off June 2nd – 3rd.
