After finishing runners up in the Leicestershire Schools County Tournament, the boys U12 seven a side hockey team represented Leicestershire in the Midlands Schools hockey finals on Wednesday 18th April at Cannock Hockey club. The team made a good start with a 1 – 0 win against Thomas Telford school from Shropshire with Harry Cregeen scoring an excellent goal. In the next game, Ratcliffe continued their good play with a comprehensive 3 – 0 win against Queen Marys school from Staffordshire. Goal scorers were Harry, Fin Spencer and Kai Kirk. Ratcliffe then came up against pre-tournament favourites Bilton Grange from Warwickshire. An outstanding Bilton Grange outfit went 4 – 0 up in the first half. It was pleasing to see Ratcliffe fight back in the second-half with Fin Spencer scoring an excellently worked goal. Despite the strong second half performance Ratcliffe lost the match 6 – 1 to finish group runners up and earn a place in the semi-final against the Leicestershire County winners; Oakham School, who had beaten Ratcliffe in the final of the county tournament earlier in the year. The semi-final was a tale of missed opportunities. Ratcliffe played the better hockey and had more goal scoring opportunities but Oakham were clinical in scoring two goals and Ratcliffe were unable to convert their chances. Despite a superb effort, Ratcliffe lost the semi-final 2 – 0 and Bilton Grange went on to beat Oakham 4 – 0 in the final. Well done to the whole team on their efforts. Kai Kirk and Tom Ferrier had excellent tournaments but the Ratcliffe Players of the Tournament were Riley Kirk and Fin Spencer for their outstanding play throughout.
